Literally ‘sitting at the feet’ of our First Nations elders in different Canadian provinces over several decades I have been taught the art of a non linear path to reach a destination.
I was instructed in these traditional ways, here’s one such example:
I was required to walk ‘with intention’ into the woods, strip long pieces of bark from a massive fallen cedar tree and learn the ways of basket weaving and to make a basket, which took days, all this before I would be included into community activities.
This inadvertent teaching showed me ways to pull from the shadows of myth and mystery to celebrate the complexity of these ways in our First Nations communities. Ultimately through our First Nations peoples I came to know deeper principles of universal connection.
A red canoe build: cutting and steaming the ribs, the oak gunnels, the hand woven seats, and canvas (painted red). I built it all.
I paddle, I photograph.
